Play Store Download Overview

Google Play Store has been around for quite a while now. The mobile marketing platform was launched in March 2012. Google Play started as the Android Market, a name that fittingly explained its role as the ultimate source for all kinds of apps and other digital products for Android-powered mobile devices. Despite being used by millions of people on a daily basis, few know how exactly this marketing platform works.

For Users:

Google Play Store allows users to block content that may contain material they would rather not see. Generally, things like porn and hate-speech are not allowed in the app store, but users can still filter out any content they deem objectionable using the store’s user settings.

Games constitute some of the most popular apps on this mobile platform. Consequently, while app categories such as widgets, books and reference, health and fitness, and the rest have not sub-categories, the Games category has over one-and-a-half dozen sub-categories, for instance, action, word, puzzle, family, casino, and so forth. This helps users get the apps they like the most more easily.

With Google Play Store on a mobile device, a user does not have to enable installation of non-market applications, which is risky since the apps may not have been vetted to determine if they pose security threats. Google scans apps for threats using Bouncer before putting them on Google Play Store.

For Developers:

During searches for apps, Google relies on query features such as Editors’ top picks, recommendations, users who have installed the app, and users who have viewed the app. Furthermore, during searches, an app’s name is the most critical piece of metadata. Generally, titles should be short, unique, clear, and creative to be more visible and popular. App searches can also be determined by the features on the user’s mobile device. For instance, if a user has a device with motion-sensors, they may get different search results from the user who does not have the feature.

Low quality apps are removed from the store once every quarter to ensure standards remain at an acceptable level. After the process, the number of apps usually decreases a little. However, in general, the number of apps on the store keeps on rising.

Developers have to pay $25 to register a Google Play Developer Console account, which Google believes help improve the quality of apps published on the store by ensuring only serious developers put their apps on the platform. Google also pays its developers through a Google Wallet merchant account or a Google AdSense account. Developers get 70% of the app’s price, while the rest goes to distribution partner and operating fees.

For apps to be put on the Google Play Store, developers must create them using Android SDK. Once they meet other requirements regarding content that can be put on the store, the apps are then published through Google.

Conclusion

Google Play Store serves a distribution platform for digital products on devices that run the Android operating system. Although the stores interface is quite easy to use, how it works on a deeper level is much more complicated. Essentially, app users and app developers get a different experience when using this popular app store. Developers have tools to facilitate their efforts to make their apps succeed on the platform while users are also given tools to enable them get high quality apps and enjoy their experience when using Google Play Store.
