Most of the Android devices come pre-installed with Google Play Store app, which is the access path to the official application store for the Android operating system, owned by Google. The users can browse and download applications, games, movies, music, magazines and books, which are published by Google after the employees are checking the files for malware. Initially, the name of the app store was Android Market, but in March 2012 it was replaced with Google Play. Then, Google released new updates frequently, to improve the functionality of the application.
On the Google Play there are tones of applications available for download. Some are free, while others have a small or a high price, but every once in a while, they are available at a discounted price or the users can redeem a gift card or promotional code. The Google Play Store will suggest you to download applications compatible with your device, while in other countries, some carriers don’t have access to specific applications, or they are banning them (ex: tethering applications).
The users are not forced to download applications only from the Play Store, as there are lots of third party sources that are hosting applications for Android, but to be able to install them, the users must enable the Unknown Sources option from Settings.
Also, you should know that when installing applications from the Play Store, the APK files are installed on your phone’s internal storage, after the Play Store app asks your device’s PackageManagerService to install them.
With the Google Play Store application, you can update your current Android applications, but even the Play Store app needs to be updated from time to time. The latest version is 5.5.12 and the file has a size of 10.98 MB. This version comes with a few changes, such as circular animation to TV shows, as you can notice in this video:
