Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 – Third Time Charm against the Professional

The Samsung Galaxy Tab lineup was released in the year 2011.

The tablets were released in a myriad of sizes and connectivity options along with screens ranging from the huge 7-inches to the enormous 10.1 inches. Moreover, the tablets offered a wide variety of display resolution and under the hood spec sheet catering to the requirements of the user. Samsung had incorporated the strategy to provide its product to every possible market segment. It would not be wrong to suggest that Samsung has tasted immense success in the process.

Tablet segment has been the Achilles Heel for the Korean smartphone giant. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 has been largely affected by the shifts made in the tablet strategy by Samsung.

Design and Handling

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 offers a typical Samsung mobile design. However, some changes have been made by the incorporation of Nature UX on Galaxy S3, but the overall appearance of the hardware has been the same. In comparison, the Tab Pro 8.4 makes use of the popular artificial leather looking plastic rear. The tablet is on a similar footing as the Apple’s slate. The deletion of capacitative Menu key marks the difference between the Pro 8.4 and older slates. It includes an Android standard Task Switch control. Overall, the Tab Pro 8.4 is a bigger version of the Galaxy Note 3.

Display

A superior 10.1-inch standard LCD display includes a lower resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels translating into poor 149-pixels per inch of pixel density and 16:10 aspect ratio. No relative change has been made to the display features as that of Tab 2 7.0. The blacks are not dark enough with the whites being significantly bright. However, the resulting contrast ratio is good overall.

The Tab Pro 8.4 includes an 8.4-inch Super Clear LCD display. A smaller screen in the tablet segment having a higher resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels results into higher pixel density of 359-ppi. The image quality is excellent with wide viewing angles and amazing deep blacks. It also offers great outdoor visibility.

Operating System

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 runs on the Android operating system, version 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The standard TouchWiz UI is skinned with the Jelly Bean operating system. A similar combination can be seen on lower variants of Galaxy Tab 3. The TouchWiz enhanced Jelly Bean OS offers a feature rich Android experience.

The Galaxy Pro 8.4 runs on an upgraded Android OS, version 4.4.2 KitKat along with the standard TouchWiz UI customization. In addition, the Tab Pro 8.4 comes with the Magazine UI for home screens.

Processing Unit

The Tab 3 10.1 includes an Intel Atom based Z2560 chipset along with a decent dual-core processing unit. Both cores run at top speed of 1.6GHz. In addition, a PowerVR based SGX544MP2 graphic processing unit and 1GB of RAM ensures decent functionality. The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 comes with the state of the art Snapdragon 800 chipset, designed by Qualcomm. A powerful quad-core Krait 400 processing unit, clocked at top 2.3GHz speed along with a dedicated Adreno 330 graphic chipset and superior 2GB of RAM offers enhanced performance levels. The Tab Pro 8.4 offers an almost similar performance as that of the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, in real time functioning.

Memory and Battery

Both tablets offer 16GB and 32GB internal memory variants. In terms of expandable memory, both tablets can expand memory up to maximum 64GB through microSD card.

The Tab 3 10.1 incorporates a non-removable Li-Po battery having higher 6800-mAh capacity. In comparison, the Tab Pro 8.4 encompasses a non-removable Li-Ion battery having lower 4800-mAh capacity. The Tab 3 10.1 offers 40 hours of Talk Time on 3G, whereas, the Tab Pro 8.4 offers 11 hours of non-stop multimedia experience.
