Pebble Time Steel vs Pebble Steel – Top Specs and Features Comparison

Pebble ran a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, because in less than hour after launching it, the company managed to raise $1 million for its Pebble Time watch, and until now, almost 80,000 backers pledged over $20 millions. However, the campaign hasn’t ended yet, which means that Pebble will have enough money to fund its Pebble Time watch, which will be shipped soon. Starting from June 22, you will be able to order the Pebble Time, which is trying to take on the Apple Watch.

The new Time smartwatch is, officially, the most funded project on Kickstarter, generating $9 million in pre-orders in the first day when the campaign was launched. Soon, Pebble will build the “Steel” version of the popular watch, which will be more expensive. In this article, we’ll compare both devices’ specs and you’ll decide which watch would look better around your wrist.

For starters, we’ll tell you that the first Pebble watch came in 2013, then one year later was released the second generation called Pebble Steel, which had a thinner body, the display was protected with Gorilla Glass and the device featured tactile metal buttons.

The Pebble Steel measures 46x34x10.5mm, it weights 56grams, its display is LED and has a size of 1.26inches, supporting 144×168 pixels, it has three important sensors: 3D accelerometer, Compass and Ambient Light, it’s powered by a lithium-ion polymer battery that lasts up to seven days under average usage, and it supports Bluetooth 2.1 and 4.0.

The Pebble Time Steel will measure 47×37.5×10.5mm, and because it will be bigger, it will weight 62.3grams. Its screen will be also LED, but it will measure 1.25inches and its resolution isn’t known yet. Besides the three known sensors, it will support a microphone and the battery will last up to ten days. Finally, it will connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0.

Both watches have cases made from marine-grade stainless-steel and the bands are made of leather, but you can opt for the metal band and pay more money. The color options for the Pebble Time Steel are: Silver, Gunmetal Black and Gold, while the Pebble steel is available in brushed stainless steel and matte black variants.

The Pebble Time Steel has a new color e-paper display, a new UI, allowing you to scroll to see previous or upcoming events by suing Time’s side buttons. You will see a new app menu which will allow you to see more relevant information. Luckily, this new UI, which shortened the time required to retrieve information from your watch, will come to the first Pebble and Pebble Steel. Also, on the new watch you’ll be able to install any one of the 6500 Pebble apps.

The price of the Pebble Steel is £149, while the Pebble Time Steel will cost £169 ($250).
