HTC One Mini 2 vs. Sony Xperia Z2 – Comparison of Screen Display, Camera and Configuration

The HTC One Mini 2 and the Sony Xperia Z2 are two among the innumerable smartphones that found their way into the market in the first half of 2014.

While the arrival of the Sony smartphone was made in February, HTC declared the arrival of its smartphone just a few months later in May. Sporting the typical candy bar design, the keypad forms a part of the screen in both the devices. Both the smartphones are single SIM gadgets. The Sony Xperia Z2 works using a micro-SIM whereas the HTC One Mini 2 utilizes a nano-SIM for its operation. For a side by side comparison of these smartphones, we request you to continue reading the article.

Design, Dimensions and Weight

The HTC One Mini 2 smartphone depicts a more boxy design with fairly sharp corners. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z2 comprises rounded corners. Even as the Mini 2 encompasses a metal body, the Xperia Z2’s body is a combination of glass and metal. Sony’s smartphone is taller and wider than its HTC counterpart but is thinner. The Sony smartphone is also heavier than the HTC handset. The two smartphones feature a volume control key on their right. In addition, the Xperia Z2 also has camera shutter and lock/unlock key on the side. Moreover, the Sony Xperia Z2 is dust and water resistant.

Verdict: Without doubt, the HTC One Mini 2 is more compact and fits with ease both into your pocket and in your hand. However, the Sony Xperia Z2 is less prone to wear and tear.

Screen Display

The HTC One Mini 2 is integrated with a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 display screen in contrast to the 5.2-inch IPS LCD display screen of the Sony Xperia Z2. While the HTC handset has a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution and 326ppi pixel density, the Sony device incorporates a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and 424ppi pixel density. Additionally, the Xperia Z2 display is composed of a scratch-resistant glass and is also shatterproof. However, the HTC display with its Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is only scratch resistant.

Verdict: Sony easily wins the battle in this case. The bigger screen and wider viewing angles due to its IPS LCD display make a lot of difference to how images and texts are displayed. Added to these factors, the higher pixel density and resolution ensure that the screen output is clearer, sharper and crisper than that of the HTC gadget. The shatterproof feature is another reason why the Sony Xperia Z2 deserves extra credit.

Camera

The primary rear snapper of the HTC One Mini 2 is a 13MP camera contrasting the 20.7MP camera of the Sony smartphone. Both the snappers are integrated with an LED flash. With a few common features like geo-tagging and auto focus, the Sony device offers various functions such as panorama, smile and face detection, digital zoom, burst mode, HDR, and touch to focus. The two cameras can record 1080p HD videos with the Sony Xperia Z2 additionally recording 4K videos. But, HTC beats Sony with its 5MP secondary rear snapper as Sony offers only a 2.2MP front snapper.

Verdict: For taking photographs and videos, there is no doubt that the Sony Xperia Z2 renders a stunning output compared to the HTC One Mini 2 owing to its numerable features. But if you want to do a video chat or take your own photographs, the HTC One Mini 2 yields better results.

Hardware and Software

Talking about the hardware configuration, both HTC and Sony house a quad-core processor each with 2.3GHz and 1.2GHz clocking frequencies respectively. An Adreno 305 graphics processor is built into the HTC One Mini 2 in the place of the Adreno 330 graphics processor in the Sony Xperia Z2. The Sony smartphone fits in 3GB RAM that is triple of what is available in the HTC smartphone. The internal storage in both smartphones is 16GB that can be expanded externally to a maximum limit of 128GB.

The two smartphones operate using the Android KitKat, coupled with their own customized user interfaces. HTC integrates its HTC Sense 6 UI whilst Sony opts for Sony UI.

Verdict: No second thoughts on this. Housing a higher RAM, a CPU processor with a higher clocking frequency and a more powerful graphics processor; operating the Sony Xperia Z2 is quite effortless. This is not to say that the HTC One Mini 2 fails to do a good job. It is just that the Sony smartphone is undoubtedly better.
