At the beginning of the year, the Chinese manufacturer released its latest flagship, the Xiaomi Mi 4, then, three months later was launched the Mi 4i for the Italian market. The release of the new phone took place on April 23, in New Delhi, but it will be available fior sale starting from April 20. The phone will be shipped through Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Mobile Store and Bharti Airtel. This article is a face-off between the two models and we’ll analyze their specs in order to pick a winner.
Design and dimensions
The Xiaomi Mi 4 has a glossy back panel available in two variants of colors: white and black and there’s a metallic frame running around the edges. The shape of the device is rectangular, with rounded corners and the physical dimensions are 139.2×68.5×8.9 mm, with a weight of 149 grams. The Mi4i has an unibody design and its plastic rear panel blends across the display edges, but the advantage of the material is that it’s resistant to grease and fingertips. This phone comes in five variants of colors (white, black, pink, blue and yellow) and measures 138.1×69.6×7.8mm.
Both models feature a display of the same size: 5inches, using IPS LCD technology which delivers a resolution of 1080x1920pixels at 441ppi. The Mi 4i has a sunlight display whose technology eliminates the light refractions and the user can see better the content on the screen under sunlight.
Hardware and OS
The Xiaomi Mi 4 comes installed with Android v4.4.3 (KitKat) and it’s powered by an old quad core 2.5GHz Krait 400 processor that is supported by a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset, and uses an Adreno 330 GPU – the same configuration found on the Galaxy S5. However, it houses 3GB of RAM, not 2GB like the Samsung flagship, and offers two variants of unexpandable internal memories, with capacities of 16 and 64GB. The Mi 4i comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop, but likewise the Mi 4, it benefits from the latest MIUI 6.0. But the chipset on this model was built on 64bit architecture, being a Snapdragon 615 Second Generation which is powered up by a quad core 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a quad core 1.1GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, paired with 2GB RAM, an Adreno 405 GPU and 16GB of internal storage, also unexpandable.
The Xiaomi Mi 4 supports only one SIM phone and 3G connectivity, in India, while the Mi 4i is a dual-SIM phone with 4G support.
There is no difference in terms of rear cameras, as both are 13MP (Sony or Samsung) with 5-elements lens, f/2.0 aperture, real-time HDR, touch focus etc. When it comes to secondary cameras, the Mi 4 excels with an 8MP shooter, while the Mi 4i model has a 5MP camera with f/1.8 aperture and 80-degree wide angle lens.
The battery on the Mi 4 is smaller, having a capacity of 3080 mAh, while the Mi 4i is powered by a 3120 mAh battery and both units are non-removable.
The Xiaomi Mi 4 16GB variant costs Rs 17,999 (285 dollars) and the 64GB variant is priced at Rs. 21,999 (349 dollars). The Mi 4i is much cheaper, costing only Rs. 12,999 (206 dollars).
