WhatsApp Rolls Out Voice Calling Feature for iOS App

WhatsApp, the most popular mobile messaging app that is now owned by Facebook, has rolled out a major update for the Apple family of its user base.

Users of the iPhones can now make free WhatsApp voice calls to the other users of the app, a feature that is now being enjoyed by the Android users in full. The WhatsApp voice calling feature for the Android users was rolled out last month and by the time of this writing, all the users of Android devices should be able to access this feature by downloading the latest version of the app from the official Google Play Store.

There is little difference between the newly introduced WhatsApp voice calling feature for iOS and that offered by Skype on the same platform. When using the WhatsApp voice calling feature, it is mandatory that you connect to a Wi-Fi internet source if you want to enjoy free calls. However, this might not apply in case you choose to use data connection as you may have to pay your phone carrier to get these services.

WhatsApp voice calling for iOS to reach all users in a few weeks

When WhatsApp started rolling out updates for the Android users, the feature was rolled out in phases. While the users who had the feature had to pass it on by calling those who had not received it, it took sometime before all users could be able to access it.

Even though the same procedure is expected to be adopted when rolling out this iOS update, it will be a little faster. This is due to the fact that all the iPhones have been manufactured by one company and operate on one platform, which is contrary to the Android devices. Furthermore, the number of users on iOS using WhatsApp may not be that vast as that available on the Android devices.

The latest version of WhatsApp 2.12.1 for iOS is the one you need in order to get a glance of this voice calling feature. However, this feature is still in beta and as such, it will work with some errors and bugs affecting it. Other features you get on the latest WhatsApp 2.12.1 APK for iOS is a new share extension for iOS 8, a quick camera button for taking snapshots when in chats, ability to edit contacts from within the app as well as the ability to send multiple video messages at a time.

Just like with the case of pictures, you can still crop as well as rotate these videos before you send them. Using the share extension feature, you can share videos, photos and other links from other apps to WhatsApp.

How it works

When someone calls you on WhatsApp, a notification message immediately appears with clear details of the caller. Upon answering the calls, you will see new options available on the UI, where you can mute calls or put them on the speakerphone. It is also possible to send the caller a message. If the new WhatsApp voice calling feature for iOS takes the same design as the Android version, you may end up seeing a Calls tab with details of your calling information.
