Self Skin Exam Necessary As Skin Cancer Leads To Other Cancers: Study

In a new study researchers say self exams of one’s skin is important as apart from melanoma other skin cancers too at a young age may lead to other types of the disease.

The finding is published on the website of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers, & Prevention journal and it says the nonmelanoma skin cancer is likely to have higher risks of melanoma as well as other cancers if it is diagnosed to any individual below the age of 25 years.

The nonmelanoma skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

Researchers say the risk is 23 times higher to those who have been diagnosed with the nonmelanoma skin cancer under the age of 25. The finding is crucial as it will lead to better cancer screening.

Some of the risk factors for skin cancer have been detailed by the American Cancer Society and it includes unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and other family members having had skin cancer.

The society says further that the UV radiation is not only limited to sunlight, but it is also due to the tanning beds. Individual who earlier had severe sunburns or who has pale skin is at higher risk.

Few of the preventive measures have also been pointed by experts like seeking out shade, using sunscreen with SPF 30 and more, wearing protective clothing in the sun, wearing sunglasses and also by avoiding the tanning beds.

The study concludes skin cancer is early detection and this is the reason self exams are necessary.
