Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 – Comparison within the Tab Lineup

The speed at which Samsung has been manufacturing tablets for the users reveals its intentions of capturing the tablet market.

The South Korean giant aims to cater all kinds of users with its products. However, the release of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 reveals a systematic approach of the Company to provide its users with an amazing product.

Regardless, the third-gen Tab 7.0 from Samsung Galaxy lineup appears a basic product from the South Korean giant. Samsung has been given due emphasis to the Note lineup. Meanwhile, the Tab series come with modest software upgrade. The release of Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 does not come equipped with a recent version of the operating system. Whether the Marvell Silicon upgrade to Tab 3 7.0 makes it worth considering over its predecessor, let us explore.

Design and Handling

Samsung manufactured the Tab 3 7.0 on similar lines as the Tab 2 7.0. The Tab 3 7.0 offers a compact design along with 9.9mm of thickness. The weight is also reduced to 306 grams. In comparison, the Tab 2 7.0 provides 10.5mm of thickness and touches 345 grams on the scale. These Samsung devices have been manufactured in the Galaxy S4 design. The edges are straight having thin bezels on the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. It revealed Samsung’s modern design expression. The use of polycarbonate plastic in the chassis caters a decent appearance, if not deluxe.

The lean bezels and lightweight Tab 3 7.0 made it highly portable device. The iPad Mini 3 offers white color option only. On the contrary, the Tab 2 7.0 is made available in black and red color options apart from white colored models.

Display

A 7-inch TFT display with inferior 1024 x 600 pixels of resolution results in poor pixel density of 170-ppi. The Tab 2 7.0 does not come with comparable display features. Both lack sharpness, but provide excellent image quality. Their LCD displays offer modest brightness and contrast levels. They provide optimal black levels and readable text under bright sunlight. Regardless, reflective screen changes its viewing experience.

Operating System

The Tab 3 7.0 functions on the Android based OS 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. It is accompanied with the company’s TouchWiz user interface. The Tab 3 7.0 lacks the Android based Jelly Bean v4.2.2 upgrade.

Conversely, the Android based 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich version functions on the Tab 2 7.0. The OS is upgradable to the Jelly Bean v4.2.2. A proprietary TouchWiz user interface is skinned on the Android OS.

Processing Unit

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 employs TI OMAP 4430 chipset coupled with a dual core processor, efficiently running at a top velocity of 1GHz. Furthermore, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU along with RAM of 1GB provides decent performance. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 provides improved Marvell PXA986 chipset and Cortex A9 dual core processor, set at top frequency of 1.2GHz. In addition, similar GPU and RAM specs as Tab 2 7.0 powers the Tab 3 7.0.

Memory and Battery

Both devices offer 8GB and 16GB of internal storage capacity variants. The Tab 2 leads its successor with an additional 32GB internal storage capacity variant. The Tab 3 7.0 offers 64GB of external storage capacity, whereas, the Tab 2 7.0 offers up to 32GB of external memory.

Both Tabs draw power from non-removable Li-Ion battery with 4000-mAh capacity.
