PlayStation 3 vs PlayStation 4 – Is It Worth The Upgrade?

]]>

The PlayStation 3 has been the host of some really iconic gaming titles, and surely each PS3 owner has managed to pile up some epic memories on the console. However, the PlayStation 4 has arrive, putting an end to an era. The question is, however, if the next gen console can match its predecessor and if it has enough upgrades to be worth upgrading if you already own a PS3.

Design

The PS3 came in more than one form. At first there was the original variant, which had a chunky profile. Next came the slim model which was..well…slim. The third variant was a variation of the Slim model, with a sliding disk tray cover included. The PS4 on the other hand comes in a physical form that is most similar to the middle one, but unlike the PS3 which was more curvy, the PS4 is more angular and has light on the middle from one side to the other, indicating the current status of the device.

Hardware

There are some changes present on the PS4 in comparison to the PS3. For starters, the highly criticated Cell architecture of the PS3, which many complained that was too hard to develop for, has been removed and replaced with an x86 platform that is also used on the Xbox and PC computers running Windows. The PS4 had an octa core processing unit branded AMD Jaguar, with a 2.7 GHz clock speed. The graphics are handled by the 800 MHz AMD Radeon GPU, which has GDDR5 RAM that amounts to 8 GB.

The PS3 however comes with a single core CPU. It has a 3.2 GHz clock speed and uses the help of a 550 MHz GPU. The RAM capacity is just 256 MB (DDR3 RAM), and it is said that the PS4 is 10 times stronger than the previous device. Playing PS3 games on the PS4 won’t be an option due to the different architectures used for the consoles. Nevertheless, there is a cloud game streaming service in the UK which will allow you to play PS3 games on a PS4, if that’s really what you want.

Controllers

The DualShock 4 controller that comes with the PS4 is a significant improvement from the DualShock 3. It features redesigned shoulder and triggers, and also a big touch screen on the middle. There is also a headphone jack available, so you won’t have a wire dragging all the way from the console.

Games

The PS3 has an outstanding game collection at your disposal since it has been around for quite some time now, but the PS4 is quickly picking up. While some titles won’t be available for play on the PS4, if they have been released for PS3 a lot earlier, you can definitely expect the PS3 to have support for many of the upcoming games, as it was promised support for several years still. Since its release, there have been some very cool launches available for the PS4, such as FIFA 2014, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, and also some exclusive games for PlayStation like LittleBigPlanet 3, The Last Of Us Remastered, or Killzone: Shadow Fall.
