Creating a VPN Network in Windows 7

Creating a VPN connection is a simple task that sometime people can find it scaring. Well one needs one to have some simple understanding but no technical knowledge required. In VPN connections there are two types of networks one there is the incoming network that you as the entity is receiving from the hotspot. The other connection is outgoing where a certain user is acting as a hotspot. Most Windows OS come with a preloaded client version that makes it easy for one to connect in public networks. Using this vpn is not secure due to trending security concern over public hotspot.

Configuring network router is essential so as it can identify what computer it will send its vpn signals to. One will need to log into the router control panel and type its IP address. When you open the router’s control panel, adjust the server settings so that it can recognize and have the Ip address of the computer. One needs to know their IP address if they need to use an outgoing connection.

There are many ways of knowing your IP but the main ones are:

  • Click on the start key on the search space type in cmd the a dialog box will appear that you will input the command prompt ipconfig
  • Search on the internet by typing “what is my IP”

When the router settings are fully adjusted, open the network sharing center and look for “change adapter settings”. Adapters will appear showing wireless connection have already been configured on your computer. If it fails select new Incoming Connection, reconnect and you can change the number of users that can access the computer to a certain limit.

After setting the user’s access numbers one will be required to select how they will be connecting to your computer. That connection largely depends on the connection type that you as the administrator want to create. One can decide either to use a password protect in you username or not to include. If the network is a public network it will be left open and if it will be a home or work network it is advisable to set a password to protect your privacy. One should also check on “file and printer sharing” as keeping it off will enable remote users to access your computer. Avoiding such a situation is by ensuring that it is turned on

A confirmation message will be displayed that an incoming VPN connection has been created. The remote users will be required to know the computer name that they will enter on their computers so as to connect. If the connection is password protected only those users that know the password can connect and if one doesn’t have it will fail to connect.

If one selects back the adapters list the connection will have been created automatically. Even though there is presence of some technical words that might not be a setback for one understanding how to set up a vpn connection whether an incoming or outgoing connection.
