The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch is heading for the Opening Ceremony taking place later today. It has made a journey of over 45,000 km across Canada through the most treacherous weather conditions.

The torch was produced and designed by Bombadier Inc., a Canadian company that has been in business since 1942. It had to be devised to withstand extreme weather such as sub-zero temperatures, snow, hail, wind and rain and was tested in a weather simulation chamber before being launched into the real wintry conditions.

Over 12,000 torches were produced, one for each bearer, and they were hand-finished in Montreal.
By the time the torch reaches the Opening Ceremony it will have been carried for 106 days, across the length and breadth of Canada, through 1,037 communities. Along with the traditional method of conveying the torch by foot, it has also been transported by some novel methods such as skis, snowmobiles and canoes.
