Triple PGA Tour Winner Jim Thorpe Sentenced in Tax Case

Professional golfer Jim Thorpe, a three-time winner on the US PGA Tour, has been sentenced to a year in prison for failing to pay more than two million dollars in income tax.

Thorpe, a 13-time winner on the Champions Tour, plead guilty in September to two counts of failing to pay income taxes. According to prosecutors, Thorpe has agreed to pay all taxes, interest and penalties owed to the IRS, a sum of over $2 million.

The 60-year-old Thorpe will also have to serve 200 hours community service and spend two years on supervised release.

Thorpe won five events and earned over $4.7 million on the course from 2002-2004, the time in which he is charged with not paying his taxes.

The judge also added two years of supervised probation to the golfer's sentence.

"I made a mistake in my life and it's going to cost me 12 months of my life," Thorpe said. "So, we all learn from our mistakes, and most definitely I learned from this one. And, we'll just have to see what the future holds now."
