Armory Demolition To Start Next Week
Salvage and demolition work on the Armory building and the drill hall behind it will begin next week, starting with additional asbestos removal, Elmira officials said Thursday.

The city awarded the demolition contract to EPIC contracting for just over $1 million. Asbestos abatement will begin January 19, with demolition is scheduled for mid-to-late February. The contractor will salvage architectural stones, bricks, and the flagpole, which will be stored for future projects. The armory closed in 2006 after part of the facade fell onto the street. The project should take about four months to complete.
The city plans to rent the American Legion's parking lot at 316 Lake St. during the demolition for $150 a month. The council will vote on the agreement when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of City Hall, 317 E. Church St.
The change in strategy does not affect the cost to the city, Burin said.
The contractor will be able to salvage a good deal of material, such as framing lumber, Tonello said. Otherwise, the project would have been much more costly, he said.
The city will retain certain architectural elements from the Armory to be reused elsewhere, officials said. The flagpole, for instance, will be moved to the city's new Regional Public Safety Training Center at 309 W. Center St.
